late models.
The Friday Night Rumble event
was added to the Ponderosa Speedway
schedule in 2007 and Jason Keltner
of Campbellsville, KY would win that
inaugural event for Super Late
Models and would repeat his victory
in the event in 2008. Another
Campbellsville, KY native, Jordan
Bland, would snag the event win in
2009.
Mike Marlar from Winfield, TN
would win in 2010 and is the
defending champion.
We will also have Modifieds,
Street Socks, and Open 4 Cylinders.
The last
race of the season will be the Fall
Classic paying $5000 to win for late
models.
The Fall Classic first
appeared on the Ponderosa Speedway
docket back in 1990 and Steve
Francis of Ashland, KY
would win the first-ever Fall
Classic event. The late Jack Boggs
of Grayson, KY
would win back-to-back Fall Classic
events in 1991 and 1992, while the
event was rained out in 1993.
Darrell Lanigan of
Union,
KY was the race winner in 1994, while Mike
Jewell of
Scottsburg, IN would lay claim to the event title in
1995. Legendary chassis builder C.J.
Rayburn of
Whiteland,
IN would win the event in 1996, while fellow
Hoosier state native Don O’Neal of
Martinsville,
IN would score back-to-back wins
in the 1997 and 1998 Fall Classic
races. Darrell Lanigan would become
the third two-time winner of the

Joey Daniel of Liberty, KY
would score his biggest career win
to date with the Fall Classic
checkered flag in 2000. Steve
Barnett of Franklin, IN would take
the race victory in 2001, while the
event would not be contested in
2002, but return in 2003 with Johnny
Wheeler of Campbellsville, KY
scoring his only Fall Classic win to
date. Bobby Wolter, Jr. of

race, while
Chris
Combs of Isom, KY would be the
victor of the Fall Classic in 2005.
Aaron Hatton of
Mount Sterling,
KY
would grab a popular Fall Classic
victory in 2006, while Brad Neat of Dunnville, KY
would take the checkered flag in the
2007 race. Greg Johnson of Bedford, IN would turn in
a dominant performance to win the
2008 race, while Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN
would charge his way to the front to
win the 2009 Fall Classic.
Eric Wells won in 2010 and is
the defending race champion. We will
also have Modifieds, Outlaw
Sportsman, and Open 4 Cylinders.

RECORD CROWD AS “THE SALT ROCK
EXPRESS” PICKS UP THE 2nd ANNUAL
COAL MINERS CLASSIC WIN!!!
Apple Grove, WV. 8 Aug 2011~ The
ADRA Dirt Late Model Championship
Series (www.adraracing.net)
presented by Suddenlink
(www.suddenlink.com) and the United
Super Dirt Car Series
(www.usdcs.com) joined forces with
Lucky 7 Speedway
(www.luckysevenspeedway.com) on
Saturday Aug. 6th to
host one of eastern KY’s crown jewel
events, the 2nd Annual
Coal Miner’s Classic. A record crowd
attended as 24 of the region’s
finest driving talent turned out
despite rain in every direction of
Whitesburg, KY and more record high
temperatures. Drivers came from WV,
OH, KY, VA, and TN to enter this
$5000 to win showdown and a showdown
it was as the lead was never
securely commanded by any driver
until the last lap of the 50 lap
feature.
Josh McGuire of Grayson, KY would
amazingly set fast time in the
borrowed #81M Rocket from the Fout’s
Racing Team after blowing an engine
in his own familiar #41 Rayburn last
week and would go on to win his
heat. The top 17 qualifying times
were separated by less than 1
second. That’s about the time it
takes the average person to blink!
McGuire would lead the first few
laps before a flat tire sent him
hurrying to the pits for a tire
change and back to the tail of the
field before the green flew after
his 2 courtesy laps for changing a
flat in the feature. Josh would then
make an impressive charge back to
the front of the field as he fought
through several more incidents and
some extremely close calls along the
way.
The “Salt Rock Express” Eddie
Carrier Jr. in the #28 orange and
black Grover Motorsports Rocket kept
a good head of steam built up all
night as he would win his heat and
start 3rd in
the feature. Carrier, who is a fan
favorite in KY where his family is
from, would run in the 2nd position
most of the night and exchange lead
several times with Josh McGuire and
Mark Sturgill in the #4 B&D Repair
sponsored Rocket chassis powered by
a steel block engine! Sturgill was
doing a yeoman’s job of holding off
the advances of Carrier as the 2
raced door to door for nearly 30
laps until a late race spin as he
drove into turn 3 just a little too
hard would send him to the tail.
Sturgill would hold to salvage a
respectable 9th place finish on race
worn tires. “Bad Fast” Josh McGuire
would make his way back to the front
and he and Carrier also went door to
door until lap 50 when Carrier would
edge ahead and pick up the feature
win and $5000!
“The longer we went green the better
my tires (Hoosiers) got,” explained
Carrier in victory lane. “After the
cautions it took a lap get going
again but once we did I could go
back to the front. This is a nice
race track here and I thank Lucky 7
Speedway for putting this race on
for all our coal miners. I thank the
good Lord for letting me have a job
I love.”
The race was not without incident as
several cautions caused some delays
and equipment failures from the
electronic scoring company
contracted to score the race would
eventually lead to scoring the race
manually. Jamie Trimble, who
moderates the East KY Racing message
board,
(www.eastkyracing.proboards.com)
saved the day as he stepped in to
score. Jamie is revered as one of
the best scorers in our region.
ADRA regular Kenneth Howell in the
#21H Barry Wright chassis won the
hard charger award after getting
into the event on an ADRA series
provisional. Kenneth started 20th and
finished 6th. The Double
H Racing Fabrications Middleman
Award goes to “Anton the One Man
Gang” Anthony Adams who started 8th and
ran well early on but was involved
in a couple of incidents which
eventually left him in 10th place.
Adams will receive a certificate
worth 50% off any Double H Racing
Fabrications products.
“This was a great race full of side
by side action, passing, and
excitement, and WOW! What a crowd!”
stated ADRA Competition Coordinator
Rocky Estep. “This was our first
time coming to Lucky 7 ever. What a
race! There was passing all through
the field and not one position was
uncontested for a single lap all
night. I’ve seen a lot of races and
I saw drivers do some things that
totally amazed me. This field was
full of great talent and the track
was super racey! The Lord helped us
overcome rain, record high
temperatures, equipment failures for
the company contracted to score the
race, and eventually fog, to get
this one in. We appreciate each and
every driver and fan that came out
tonight in honor of our coal miners
who are so important to us. I’d like
to personally thank Jamie Trimble
for helping out with the scoring
situation. Thank Josh Baker and his
Lucky 7 Speedway team for having us
for this awesome crown jewel event.
We had a blast and the people at
Lucky 7 are just super nice people.
We felt right at home there. We
also thank Tracey Burchell and the
guys from USDCS that came out for
job well done also. As always we
thank God for a great race, a safe
race, for His grace, mercy, and
salvation.”

scheduled to go to Moler Raceway
Park next on September 9th.
